Members of Surfrider's legal team Are you an attorney? Join our LIT!

The role of the Legal Issues Team ('LIT') is to provide pro-bono services to the Chapters and Surfrider Foundation as a whole (through the international headquarters) on a case-by-case, issue-by-issue basis. LIT participants are talented and accredited attorneys from various geographic locations, representing a vast range of legal expertise. The list of volunteer attorneys is maintained in the LIT database. The LIT is managed by the Litigation Manager and directed by the Legal Issues Committee of the Board of Directors.

To join our LIT, just send your resume and short note of interest to Angela Howe at ahowe@surfrider.org

Are you a law student?

Surfrider Foundation's Legal Department routinely offers internship and externship opportunities. Legal interns and externs are able to assist in addressing all of the legal issues faced by Surfrider Foundation, including environmental litigation, legal policy analysis, due diligence research, and Chapter assistance activities. Summer legal interns are also expected to work offsite on certain occasions such as California Coastal Commission hearings, federal and state court dates, administrative hearings and rulemakings, some Chapter meetings, educational seminars, meetings with outside counsel, and other events. Both summer interns and externs work under the supervision of the Litigation Manager.

With the help of the Dillon Henry Memorial Scholarship Fund, we have already filled our Summer 2008 legal intern positions. We will likely need assistance in the Fall of 2008 from legal externs. If you are interested in applying, please contact your law school regarding unpaid externship options. Some schools may offer school credit. For more information, please contact ahowe@surfrider.org.

Summer 2009 Internships Thanks to the Dillon Henry Memorial Internship Fund

Created in 2007 by his parents, Harriet Zaretsky and Stephen Henry, the Dillon Henry Memorial Internship was created to honor Dillon’s memory, recognize his commitment to the oceans and coastal environment and help young people to pursue a career in coastal and marine conservation. This endowment provides funding for the Surfrider Foundation to hire and train the best and brightest interns each year. Funds are used to provide stipends for two qualified internships annually to work with Surfrider Foundation’s Environmental Department and/or Legal Department. Interns are required to work a minimum of twelve weeks and must attend an informal meeting with the fund’s donors during their internship. The Dillon Henry Memorial Internship provides a unique opportunity for emerging leaders in the environmental field to train with the leading grassroots, environmental non-profit focused on the protection of the world’s oceans, waves and beaches.
